Program Overview

Adult ESL classes meet a continuing need in our community, helping residents improve their English communication skills and function more effectively in the United States. The YWCA Elgin ESL programs integrates:

  • Speaking,reading, and writing skills
  • Computer skills
  • Civic Participation
  • Job Readiness Skills
  • Career Exploration
  • Financial Literacy
  • Online ESL classes
  • Specialized ESL classes to explore careers in the U.S. as well as preparation for educational careers

The YWCA ESL Program is funded through the Illinois Community College Board.

In addition to the Adult ESL classes, the YWCA Elgin offers Family Literacy, which serves to "empower the parent to grow the child." During the regular school year, (Sept – May), adult ESL students attend classes while their children attend ESL preschool. On Fridays, the parent and child join together for special interactive activities.
