Program Overview

Wilkes Family Literacy provides adult education, parenting education, Parent and Child Together time, and early childhood education for families of Wilkes County. The program meets at Unified City Church, a central location for those students unable to attend classes on WCC campus and provides free childcare during classtime while parents are on-site. Currently English as a Second Language classes are offered and Adult High School/GED classes will be offered in the future. Based on a comprehensive family literacy model, we strive to meet the needs of low-income families by breaking through barriers, such as lack of transportation and childcare, and give them the education and skills to raise themselves out of poverty.

Cost Info

There is no cost to attend classes.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Quote from Juana:

"[The] ESL program has been for me very important, because it helped my children and me a lot, all what I know it's thanks to this program. When I started coming I didn't know English, just a few words, and it helped my children for kindergarten.

. . . Now the life is easier for me, I can take my children to their appointments and talk with people without translator, and as well I passed the citizenship that made me feel very proud of myself. One of my goals is to get the GED or High School diploma, [which] is why I still come to school, because I need to learn more English, and I like [it] because this way I know more people and have fun too. And I feel more happy. Thanks to those who are helping our program."
