I was born in Spain and raised in Venezuela. Back home, I had a strong work history and continued to grow in my career, moving up the corporate ladder. I first came to Wesley Community Center because my sister-in-law works there. When I arrived in the United States, I didn't speak English. While my wife worked, I spent most of my time at home. I wanted to feel useful, connect with others, and find purpose in this new country. I began participating in several programs at Wesley, including ESL, Digital Literacy, the Senior Program, and the Food Pantry. “Wesley helped me speak more English and remember the computer skills I used in my old job," I often share.
The Digital Literacy workshops were especially meaningful to me because they helped refresh skills I had used often in my previous work in Venezuela. When the computer classes paused, I was surprised and disappointed because they made me feel useful again. More than gaining skills, Wesley helped ease the fear I felt starting a new life in the U.S. I was scared when I first arrived, but now I feel more confident, useful, and able to share with others. Attending classes and joining senior activities brought me joy, fulfillment, and a strong sense of belonging. What started as a way to pass the time with puzzles grew into something much bigger.
Today, I am employed as a maintenance staff member at Wesley Community Center, giving back to the same place that once supported me. I see Wesley as an important part of my future. I feel deep gratitude for my journey. “For my life, I feel like God has given me a piece of every experience, as if He brought me to Wesley so I could learn from them here." Even though I feel I have achieved many of my life goals, I remain committed to staying involved at Wesley and continue to find meaning in giving back to my community.
