Program Overview

Aspire Wayne County (formerly Wayne County ABLE) creates the foundation for our mission of providing knowledge, skill development, and experiences for a lifetime of personal and professional growth. Aspire is an educational program for any adult testing below the 12.9 grade point level wanting or needing to improve their basic academic skills in reading, math, and/or language. Aspire is more than just the resource for obtainment of a high school equivalence diploma, it is also the source of preparing individuals with the literacy skills necessary for daily living and workplace success. Under the guides of Aspire, non-native English speakers are enrolled in English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL). This program focuses on improving four key areas of the English language: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Students are introduced to civics education and encouraged to move from learning the English language to improving other literacy skills. Adult students with young children (ages birth to 4 years of age) may bring their children to school with them where the they are enrolled in our on-site, literacy based family pre-school. As the program name, Families Learning Together, indicates; both children and adults have the opportunity to learn in separate classrooms simultaneously. At the end of each learning day, families unite to learn in an environment where parenting and family literacy skills are modeled through facilitation from the staff. This three prong approach allows the opportunity for Aspire Wayne County to have an impact on family literacy which will in turn produce both children and adults with a higher educational attainment, improve family stability, and reduce poverty by increasing the earning potential of the adult learner. Aspire Wayne County has locations in both Wayne and Holmes Counties.
