Program Overview
Unity In Action offers a variety of in-person classes in South Sioux City, Nebraska. Classes are open to all, designed to serve the needs of the Spanish-speaking Latino community. All classes offer pre- and post-assessments to ensure learning objectives are met. Childcare is provided for some classes, to improve accessibility to families.
Citizenship Classes: This is an intensive, bilingual, 8-week course designed to teach students about the history and government of the United States while also preparing them for the naturalization process. As this is an intensive course, students are expected to have a basic level of English proficiency and be able to engage in simple conversations in English. Some knowledge of English is required to participate fully. Classes are typically twice a week for 8 weeks, offered in morning and evening time slots.
Students will learn about U.S. history, government, and geography in compliance with USCIS civic questions for Naturalization. This course will cover the N-400 as well as reading and writing practice for basic conversation in English. Students will also learn about the pyramid of learning to build effective learning habits that will increase their success in the classroom and in their personal lives and create an action plan for citizenship. The course will be finalized with a practice interview in preparation for the official exam.
Leadership Academy: This is a 6-week course designed for young people to gain civic education (such as how to vote) and financial literacy (such as how to establish credit and invest), with the goal of full civic and economic participation.
Literacy: This is a 6-week course tailored to the needs of various English-learners (beginners, intermediate, families, etc.), focused on everyday conversation or navigational English. Modules include “English for Life and Work,” and “English Empowerment.” Topics include phonics, comprehension, and how to write an email in English.
Workforce Skills: Entrepreneurship and workplace safety.
