Program Overview

The Dolly Parton Imagination Library provides one free age-appropriate book a month to all Hernando children enrolled from birth to age 5 regardless of their family's economic status. DPIL books are designed to engage parents and/or caregivers to play an active role in the development of their child's pre-school and post-school futures. While all children have a tremendous capacity for learning from the moment they are born, optimal development hinges on the experiences provided by the adults who care for them. Studies show children who are read to from an early age have a larger vocabulary, better language skills, and are all around more prepared when they begin school. Reading aloud also builds a child's motivation, curiosity, memory, and confidence. According to cencus.gov there are over 7,700 children in Hernando County. While it is easy to assume every child is ready for kindergarten when they reach a certain age, there are more important factors to consider such as their emotional maturity and academic ability. By giving children the opportunity and the confidence to succeed early we are creating a significant and lasting impact on our youth's future.
