Program Overview
Our free program runs Tuesdays 6-8pm for 8 week sessions during the fall and the spring of the year. Although our program includes children, its primary focus is improving adult literacy through reading. Our program is open to all adults who wish to improve their English reading skills. Adults need not be fluent in English. Speakers of other languages are welcomed. Adults may bring up to 3 children with them aged 5-12 years. Adults without children are also welcome.
Our program focuses on building literacy through guided reading in English. Participants will be provided with free materials tailored to their own specific needs and interests.
Program overview:
On the first night, all adults will be tested to determine their current level of reading skill and areas of reading interest. These skills will be reassessed at week 8. All remaining sessions will be structured as follows:
6-7 pm: Adults will work with their assigned tutor to read a book that is tailored to their specific level of skill and interests. The tutor will read along and coach the adult as is necessary. During this time, the children will work with our education leaders to play games and engage in educational activities.
7-7:15 pm: Break time. Free snacks and refreshments will be served for all.
7:15-8 pm: Adults will read age-appropriate books to their children with the help of their assigned tutor. Adults without children will work with their assigned tutor on literacy activities such as flashcards, workbooks, word games and so forth. All activities will be appropriate to the participants' reading level.
