Student and Volunteer Success Stories
"I was trying to go to technical school, but I couldn't read the assignments. I went to the literacy council and told them I needed help reading. I started to work with Jerry and my life has never been the same. He's been my angel." Rosa, student
Rosa, whose first language is Spanish, has completed a technical degree, started her own cleaning business and has earned an associate's degree in business administration from Washburn University. Rosa said learning to read gave her the confidence to succeed.
"It gives me great satisfaction to see students increase their confidence levels as they improve their reading skills." Jerry, tutor
As a young man, Jerry wanted to be a teacher, but ended up working in sales. After retiring, Jerry joined the Topeka Literacy Council. He tutored one or two students annually for several years, fulfilling his dream of being a teacher and helping others.
