In 2014, N was resettled in South Nashville along with her husband and two young children. When she arrived in the US, her English skills were nonexistent. She had limited access to formal education since she grew up in the refugee camps of Thailand. Learning a new language and culture was difficult for N as she had to work and raise her young children. Time to learn was limited.
In 2020, six years after being in the USA as a Legal Permanent Resident, N decided that she wanted her US Citizenship. To help her on this journey, Thrive South Nashville’s Adult Education teachers worked with her on both her English and Citizenship Interview skills. For the first year of this journey, N took the Level I Citizenship classes along with English as a Second Language (ESL) classes. The next year, she advanced to the Level II Citizenship classes and the next level of ESL.
N applied for her Citizenship in December 2022. Her interview was in May of 2023. While N was nervous going into this life changing interview, she was
prepared. She passed without any difficulties and was sworn in as a US Citizen in July 2023. She said the interview was easy because of what she learned from her teachers.
