Program Overview

The Manhattan College Intensive English Language Program (IELP) provides high-quality English-language instruction to speakers of other languages in order to meet their goals: Academic, professional, and personal. Instruction in reading, writing, listening, speaking, language structure, and other pertinent areas of English language acquisition are taught using the communicative method. The IELP has six levels: 001 – 006, with Level 006 being the highest level. The Manhattan College IELP provides opportunities for students to experience cultural exchange both on-campus and in the greater community. Further, completion of IELP Level 006 satisfies the English language requirement for admission into Manhattan College degree programs. The IELP is committed to academic excellence, intercultural communication and understanding, and attention to student interests and needs.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

In Fall, 2017, Ahmad, a new immigrant from Palestine, attended the Manhattan College Intensive English Language Program (IELP). Studying at the IELP would allow him to meet the English proficiency requirements for graduate studies. Ahmad pushed himself for 22 hours per week in the IELP classes; in fact, he had perfect attendance and was among the most diligent students in the Program. This tirelessness was evident despite the fact that he had two children and a full-time job in the evenings. He successfully completed the IELP in one semester and was accepted into a graduate program in the Manhattan College School of Engineering. He ultimately graduated with a Master's degree in Engineering in 2019. Ahmad is a shining example of the dedicated, driven students who attend the IELP.
