Program Overview
General Education Development - GED
The Learning Bank Turning Point Program prepares students to take their GED Test. Classes are offered at the Learning Bank Monday through Thursday at three different times to provide flexible scheduling: 9-noon; noon to 3 pm and 4:30 to 7:30 pm. Students are also provided web based software that promotes skill remediation at all grade levels in each subject tested for GED completion - Math, English, Social Studies and Science. Students are encouraged to continue increasing their academic ability outside of the classroom to more quickly attain the next phase of their career and employment goals.
GED classes are also offered at the Monroe County Community College on Fridays. These classes are designed to support students that have passed at least one GED test, are dual enrolled and whose schedule best fits with this offering.
Adult Diploma
The Adult Diploma is an option provided by Monroe Public Schools and supported by the Learning Bank. This option is most beneficial for students that only have a few credits remaining and would benefit by taking on-line classes. Transcripts must be reviewed by Angela Ostdeik, the Learning Bank Instructor overseeing the Adult Diploma program. Once the number of credits and classes required by the State of Michigan have been identified, credit are recovered using E20/20. A student must meet with an instructor at least once a week. Theses sessions can be scheduled either at Monroe County Community College or the Learning Bank.
Dual Enrollment at Monroe County Community College
The Turning Point Program offers dual enrollment opportunities with Monroe County Community College concurrent with any Turning Point program offering e.g. GED, Adult Diploma, or remediation for admission.
Turning Point - Skills Enhancement
The skills enhancement program is designed to support students that currently have a High School Diploma or GED but need to increase their academic skills to pass the ACCUPLACER College Enterance Exam Placement Test and attend college.
Tutoring
Students have access to one on one tutoring in reading and writing comprehension and math. Tutoring is often provided by community volunteers' e.g. former Michigan Certified teachers, college professors and alumni. Tutoring is provided during the time the Turning Point student is on-site at the Learning Bank or on Monroe County Community College's main campus.
Scholarships
College-bound students may qualify for scholarship funds designed to help them attend Monroe County Community College and increase college skills while earning two credits towards their ultimate career.
Child Care
Learning Bank students are eligible for free childcare for children between infancy and four years of age during the period they are in school.
Childcare is provided by the Oaks of Righteousness Church and is patterned after the Montessori philosophy on childhood development.
Career Counseling
Career counseling is provided to each Turning Point student by a licensed Monroe County Community College counselor, either at the Learning Bank or on Monroe County Community College's campus. Students obtain valuable information on career opportunities in any area.
Mentoring
Mentoring is available to all Learning Bank Turning Point students, at either the Learning Bank or at Monroe County Community College's main campus. Mentoring is provided by program alumni, Monroe County Community College students, and other partnering community organizations and members. Mentoring provides the opportunity for mentors to develop leadership skills, enhance their communication skills, give back to their local community, strengthen their cover letter and resume, and leave a lasting positive impact on the life of a mentee.
Transportation
The Learning Bank's Turning Point Program can provide students with transportation to and from school via bus passes and gas cards. Need-based stipulations may apply.
