Program Overview

TLC provides programs for the most vulnerable people in our community - adults living with low literacy.

The Literacy Council operates programs and activities in 5 general classifications – adult basic literacy, English for speakers of other languages (ESOL), children and family literacy, GED preparation, and workforce development. These programs reach approximately 3,000 people each and TLC is currently on track to surpass that number for 2020.

Literacy energizes. Literacy is essential for personal well-being, addressing social justice and equality, and helping communities become stronger socially and economically. TLC's greatest accomplishments exist in the success stories of the people the agency serves.

Cost Info

The Literacy Council does not charge a fee for adult basic literacy tutoring programs. There is no fee for ESOL classes, however, there is a $25 for text book. For information about The Literacy Council's workplace literacy program please contact Missy Burchart at mburchart@literacy-council.org

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Dan struggled with his sobriety and survived working low wage jobs. He knew he needed help and entered a treatment program. His counselor identified literacy as a key to maintaining his sobriety and improving his economic future. Working with TLC his literacy improved and today he has 2 years of sobriety and a better job.

Laura was a new mother. She watched her sister's children struggle in school and wanted better for her son. She knew early intervention was important but was not confident in her own literacy skills. TLC's Share the Words program taught her how to engage her son through letters and colors giving him a head start.

Emanuel immigrated from Guatemala hoping for a better life for his family. He knew his English would be a barrier and sought help through TLC's ESOL classes. He progressed quickly and found employment. He was asked to become a supervisor
and successfully completed the exam in English. As his confidence in his English improved, he also became more active in his community.
