Program Overview

Since 1987, The Literacy Connection is a vibrant and unique literacy program, sponsored by the Sisters of Saint Joseph of Boston. We provide English literacy training and citizenship prep classes, with no fee, to 135 low-income adult immigrants and refugees so they may improve the quality of their lives, become economically self-sufficient, and contribute to their families and community. The program is staffed with two full-time and one part-time staff, and a 55 member volunteer tutor corps. Tutoring is one on one, designed to help adults fit education into a busy schedule and/or perfect for those who need specialized learning. Tutors meet with each student weekly, individual or small group sessions at times convenient for the student. The main program is conveniently located on a busy bus line in Brighton as well as other locations in the greater Boston area if needed.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

"From the beginning I looked forward to meeting with my very eager-to-learn student. Each week I see the progress she has made as she grows in the knowledge of reading and writing." - Sister Marie Patrice Carr, volunteer

"For us here at The Literacy Connection, our accompaniment or 'standing with' becomes our charism in action." - Sister Pat Andrews, Co-Director
