Program Overview

In Greater Denver CARES and The Baldwin Literacy Project, storytelling is very important. Stories help kids learn more than just how to read. When children read stories and tell their own, they learn to think about who they are, where they come from, and what matters to them. They talk about the choices characters make and how those choices affect others. This helps kids think deeply and ask questions like, “What would I do?" or “How do I show up for my family, my friends, and my community?" Writing their own stories helps them use their voices and feel proud of their ideas. Storytelling gives kids a safe way to understand their feelings, solve problems, and see that their lives and experiences matter.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Greater Denver CARES – ZaMariee's Testimony

Before I joined this program, writing was hard for me. I didn't think my stories were important. When we started reading books and talking about our lives, I learned that my story matters too. Writing helps me explain my feelings when I don't know how to say them out loud. Now I like to write about my family, my dreams, and who I want to be. I feel more confident sharing my ideas in class and being myself.
