Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Maria's Story

Maria came to STRIDE as a mother of three who could barely read her children's report cards. "I felt embarrassed asking my kids to read everything for me," she shared. "I wanted to be the one helping them, not the other way around."

After six months in STRIDE, Maria can now read at a fifth-grade level and helps her youngest daughter with homework every night. "I never thought I could do this," she said. "The teachers were so patient. They made me feel like I could learn, even when I wanted to give up."

Maria recently passed her driver's license test in English—something she had failed three times before joining the program. "Now I can drive my kids to school and read the signs myself," she said with pride. "STRIDE gave me my confidence back."

Today, Maria volunteers as a reading buddy in our youth program, showing other parents that it's never too late to learn.
