"Homework Help" is a proposed program of the SBGC Child Day Care Program for the children of Springfield's families. The
proposed program acknowledges a long tradition of research on the value of family literacy and is based on nationally recognized models. It is also responsive at the local level in that it recognizes Springfield's demographics and its residents' requests and needs.

An investment in early literacy for children of adults with limited English proficiency or low literacy levels not only benefits the children and their parents, but it leverages significant
public and private funding for education and support services. Numerous studies show that children from homes where English is not the first language start school at a disadvantage, and that the gap widens with time. Family literacy programs (adult and parenting education, child/parent interaction combined with
early literacy activities for children) are effective in mitigating the
challenges faced by children whose first language is not English.

With the addition of after-school homework help for limited-English-proficiency (LEP) parents and their children, English language skills and comprehension of how to help
children with their school work will continue to build self-sufficiency for immigrant families and those with low literacy levels. Making English available/accessible to immigrant families within walking distance of most of their homes helps them improve their opportunity to find economic security
through sustainable employment and self-sufficient stable lives for themselves and their children.

Early education programs play a significant role in providing children from families with low incomes and limited English proficiency the skills, training, and early interventions they
need. But teachers and childcare providers are still drastically underpaid, which negatively affects the quality of these programs. This is why SBGC's program provides an essential no-cost benefit to residents of the Springfield community.
In fact, SBGC's youth consistently achieve 100% advancement at every grade level. This is a dramatic impact given that the overall advancement level for youth in Springfield is only 64%.
