Program Overview

South Suburban College (SSC) faculty and administrators have over 60 years' experience providing literacy programs to participants in adult education classes and workplace literacy projects. These programs address the needs of the non-reader, non-native English speaking individuals, as well as the student with specific basic skills limitations. Several college departments provide services to these programs. The Division of Community Education offers Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education, GED preparation, English as a Second Language and Adult Volunteer Tutoring for low level and non-readers. The library provides special computers to assist with research as well as other resources for students with limited reading skills. SSC is currently a member of ProLiteracy and is able to use resources such as their Trainer Certification System in literacy initiatives.
