Program Overview

Communities In Schools of Appalachian Highlands (CIS-AH) offers a comprehensive program called Sesame Street in Communities, available in select schools. This program intentionally provides students and families with opportunities for learning, both individually and together. Students in Kindergarden-8th grade are provided with monthly, in-person learning facilitated by CIS-AH Student Support Coordinators. Programming includes a variety of topics including reading comprehension, study skills, healthy habits, etc. After each lesson, students are provided with activities to do together with their parents. These activities are designed to reiterate topics discussed in-school, further boosting parent/child together time.

A third component to this program are monthly family engagement events designed to expose parents to a variety of activities that tie to the Sesame Street in Communities program. This includes opportunity for family literacy enrichments and read-along strategies.

The ultimate goal of the Sesame Street in Communities program is to increase family literacy skills, develop social-emotional learning skills, and improve parent/child bonding.

Currently, Sesame Street in Communities is offered in the following school districts: Dickenson County, Tazewell County, and the City of Norton, VA.
