Program Overview

Rose City Learning Center (RCLC) offers career-aligned English classes to help adults gain the language skills needed for the workplace. Classes are held in downtown Norwich, and all learners have access to EnGen, a mobile-friendly app for extra practice anytime, anywhere. We also offer a Community ESL class that connects students with local resources and employers. Our student support staff helps learners overcome challenges like transportation and childcare, making it easier to succeed. RCLC provides the tools and support needed to build a stronger future.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

C., 18, was born in Haiti and moved to Norwich in September 2024 to live with his father. Initially, he attempted to enroll at Norwich Free Academy but was advised to enroll in adult education classes. C. joined Rose City Learning Center in September 2024 and chose to attend both morning and afternoon sessions.

He dedicated significant time to improving his English proficiency through the EnGen app. Over the past three months, C. earned his driver's license learner's permit and secured a part-time job at Target. He has also been diligently preparing for his GED exams, studying at home and with an RCLC tutor. He is on track to pass his GED exams within the next month and plans to enroll at CT State Community College Three Rivers. His ultimate goal is to attend medical school and become a cardiologist.

C. deeply values the friendships he has formed at Rose City Learning Center, considering the staff, volunteers, and students part of his family. Fluent in Haitian Creole, French, Spanish, and English, he often volunteers as a translator for RCLC staff and guest speakers.
