Program Overview
Program Name: Room to Read"
• Goal:
To significantly increase functional literacy rates among adults and kids in rural areas of Washington County area in Leland, Mississippi by providing accessible, community-based learning opportunities.
• Target Audience:
Kids K-12 and Adults aged 18-55 with limited literacy skills residing in rural communities.
• Key Components:
◦ Basic Literacy Skills: Instruction in phonics, vocabulary building, reading comprehension, and basic writing skills.
◦ Life Skills Training: Integrated modules on health awareness, financial literacy, and civic education.
◦ Community Outreach: Organization of community leaders and volunteers to promote program participation.
◦ Teacher Training: Ongoing professional development for community-based instructors on kids and adult literacy education.
• Implementation Strategy:
Establish learning centers within accessible locations in rural communities, utilize flexible scheduling to accommodate learners' needs, and incorporate culturally relevant materials.
