Program Overview
ILAD's Rohingya Program provides in-home, trauma-informed ESL, Literacy, and US citizenship classes to Rohingya refugees in the Vickery Meadow neighborhood of Dallas, TX, as well as Mesquite. These classes are designed to help refugees (primarily women) learn to adjust to life in the US through English and Rohingya language literacies, financial literacy, citizenship, health education, and soon digital literacy. These refugees typically arrive with little or no formal education, and no literacy in any language, so classes are tailored to each student's need. The goal is to give this refugee community tools they need to navigate life in the US, have economic stability, be able to help their children in school, to become US citizens and so much more. International Literacy and Development will expand services beyond the Rohingya community to other refugee groups within the next two years.

"Before, I always wanted to learn, but I wasn't allowed to go to school. Then I came to America and I had small kids, so I couldn't go to class. I remember when I got the phone call that I could have class in my home, and I was so happy! I made new friends and I learned reading and writing. Now I am a citizen and I own my own home. My whole life has changed."
