Program Overview
Adult Education at Lake Region State College helps adults build skills and earn their GED. Our main focus is helping students prepare for and pass the GED tests so they can move forward with work, college, or training. Classes are open to adults and out-of-school youth who are at least 16 years old. Students receive free instruction in reading, writing, math, science, and social studies. We also help with study skills, goal setting, and test preparation. Classes are small, and students work at their own pace with caring, experienced instructors. The Adult Learning Center is located on the Lake Region State College campus in Devils Lake. Daytime and limited evening options are available. GED testing fees and materials are often covered through scholarships. Our program is welcoming, supportive, and focused on helping students succeed.

This individual came to North Dakota from California with one hope, and that was to provide a better opportunity for their family. They were a single parent working minimum wage jobs while their kids grew up. This student is a very dedicated employee but always had the ambition to improve their life and decided the first step was getting a GED. The main motivation was to fulfill their mother's wishes to finish high school. A goal was also to demonstrate to their children and grandchildren what hard work, dedication and perseverance can do. In addition, having the attitude that no matter how difficult things might get, what roadblocks get in the way or defeat you may experience to always keep a smile on your face. This wasn't going to be an easy task due to the fact they are an older than average student, worked a full-time job and due to that they could only come to the center one day a week. This individual started studying at our Adult Learning Center in October of 2022 and by the end of January 2023 they had already completed 3 of their 4 official tests, leaving MATH as the only obstacle. It was a subject that caused anxiety and a struggle they dealt with for several months. After endless hours of studying and tackling the math test four times they earned their GED on November 16, 2023. Each time this student came to our Adult Learning Center they were all about learning. They asked questions, came with an enthusiastic attitude and a devotion to absorb as much as they could. The example set of never giving up that impressed our staff so much that we became their biggest cheerleaders and all relished in the accomplishment of them receiving their GED. As soon as the GED was attained it was time to start looking through all the doors that were now open in the workforce. This individual is currently in training at Altru Clinic here in Devils Lake as a phlebotomist.
