Program Overview

The Racine Literacy Council provides an array of literacy services that allow Racine County residents to attain their full potential and to be engaged citizens. Our vision is that every resident of Racine County has the literacy skills and the confidence to live the life they dream.

The following programs are available free.

Adult Basic Education: Adults who seek to better their reading, writing and math skills or who wish to work toward a high school diploma can attend these classes from 6-8 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays at the Racine Literacy Council. For students who cannot attend an evening class, we match them with a volunteer tutor to learn.

English Language Learning: Volunteer tutors are trained to teach learners English. We match students with a volunteer on a day and time that works for them. Classes are one-on-one or in small group. Classes meet Monday through Thursday between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.

Family Literacy: The whole family learns together in our Family Literacy Program. Parents choose their goals, whether it is to earn a high school diploma or to speak English or increase their work skills. They also learn about child development and other parenting topics. Meanwhile, their children participate in small group activities and work on their own academic skills. The program also builds family relationship and engagement. A family activity is included with every session. The program also supports parents to become leaders -- in their families, with their children's learning and in the community. The program meets Saturdays in Racine, Tuesdays in Burlington and soon will be in Waterford, too.

Basic Computer Skills: Adults who wish to learn how to use a computer or increase their skills can join this guided digital class on Mondays and Wednesdays.
