Program Overview

The Racine Literacy Council provides an array of literacy services that allow Racine County residents to attain their full potential and to be engaged citizens. Our vision is that every resident of Racine County has the literacy skills and the confidence to live the life they dream.

The following programs are available free.

  • Adult Basic Education: Adults who seek to better their reading, writing and math skills in general or in preparation of an entrance exam may find help in this program. Adults who wish to work toward earning a GED may also receive the education they need in this program. Adult Basic Education is available from 6-8 p.m., Tuesdays and Thursdays and 10 a.m. to noon, Mondays and Wednesdays. For those people who cannot attend either class, a tutor may be available.
  • English Language Learning: Volunteer tutors are trained to teach learners English. We match students with a volunteer on a day and time that works for them. Classes are one-on-one or in small group. Classes meet Monday through Thursday between 9 a.m. and 8 p.m.
  • Family Literacy: The whole family learns together in our Family Literacy Program. Parents choose their goals, whether it is to earn a high school diploma or to speak English or increase their work skills. They also learn about child development and other parenting topics. Meanwhile, their children participate in small group activities and work on their own academic skills. The program also builds family relationship and engagement. A family activity is included with every session. The program also supports parents to become leaders -- in their families, with their children's learning and in the community. The program meets Saturdays at Racine Literacy Council, Tuesdays in Burlington at Waller Elementary School, and in the following schools -- Lumin Renaissance School and Lumin Villa School, Mitchell, Julian Thomas, Knapp and Jerstad.
  • Basic Computer Skills: Adults who wish to learn how to use a computer or increase their skills can join this guided digital class on Mondays and Tuesdays.
  • Citizenship: An eight-week course prepares people for the US Citizenship Interview and Exam and is available during the Fall, Spring and Summer learning sessions.
  • Driver's Education: Classes to prepare people for the Wisconsin written driver's test are available the last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of each month. Commercial Driver's License classes are available upon request.
