Program Overview

Project Uplift, an initiative by the DL Handy Foundation, is dedicated to improving adult literacy in Northeast Georgia and East Atlanta, recognizing that reading and writing skills are essential for personal and professional success. Many adults in our community face challenges with literacy that impact their ability to secure jobs, manage finances, navigate healthcare, and support their families. Project Uplift addresses these needs by offering free literacy programs, including basic reading and writing classes, workforce literacy training, financial literacy education, digital literacy workshops, and GED preparation support. Through one-on-one tutoring, group workshops, and partnerships with libraries, community centers, and local businesses, we ensure accessible and effective learning opportunities. By improving literacy, Project Uplift helps individuals unlock new opportunities, enhance their economic stability, and actively participate in their communities. At the DL Handy Foundation, we believe that literacy is the foundation of empowerment, and together, we can uplift lives one word at a time.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

A Journey of Growth: How Project Uplift Transformed James' Life

When James first walked into Project Uplift, he felt nervous and uncertain. At 42 years old, he had spent most of his life working labor-intensive jobs, avoiding situations where he had to read or write in front of others. He had always struggled with literacy, but as a father of two, he wanted to set a better example for his children. Filling out job applications, reading bills, and even helping with his kids' homework felt overwhelming. He knew it was time for a change.

Through Project Uplift, James was paired with a volunteer tutor who worked with him patiently, meeting him where he was and helping him build confidence in his reading and writing skills. He attended weekly literacy classes, participated in small group discussions, and even learned basic financial literacy skills to help him better manage his household expenses. Slowly, James began to see progress not just in his reading but in his self-esteem.

After months of dedication, James reached a milestone that once seemed impossible, he read a book to his children for the first time. The pride in their eyes gave him the motivation to keep going. With the support of Project Uplift, he also gained the skills needed to apply for a higher-paying job that required reading work orders and writing reports, tasks he once feared but now felt prepared to take on.

James' story is just one example of how Project Uplift, a program by the DL Handy Foundation, is changing lives through literacy. By providing free and low-cost literacy programs, one-on-one tutoring, and financial and digital literacy workshops, we are helping adults like James unlock new opportunities and build brighter futures. Literacy is more than just reading words; it's about gaining the confidence to navigate the world, advocate for oneself, and create a legacy of learning for future generations. Through Project Uplift, we continue to empower individuals, one word at a time.
