We have had several success stories at EWSC, but there is one that stands out In October, a young man named Cesar began coming in to use our online Education program. Early on, I noticed his regular attendance and his work ethic, and I asked him if he would work with me in one-on-one tutoring sessions to augment the work he was doing online. The next day, we began working together, and on a daily basis for the next three months, Cesar put his shoulder to the wheel and worked enormously hard through the five disciplines of the HSE test. By his own admission, Cesar was an ex “gang-banger" from the Chicago area. He was a felon. He had gone through some bad experiences with drugs, and he carried scars on his face from street brawls. But, he had also realized - just a short time before I met him - that he needed to turn things around, and he would begin by earning his high school equivalency and then go on for more education at community college. He knew what he wanted to do, and he was focused and tenacious. His biggest challenge was his math; no surprise there, as most of our students, need math help the most. But, Cesar's starting point was at a very basic level: simple fraction operations. By the time he sat for the test, though, he was working through linear and quadratic equations, three-dimensional geometry, and functions applications. He did a lot of work on his own in addition to the work I gave him. He rarely missed a day for months and, with only a few setbacks (like a car breaking down), made steady progress. He passed the HSE on his first try and is now applying for community college classes and working steadily.
