Program Overview

Greauxing Strong Readers implements a structured, literacy-focused Parent and Child Together (PACT) component in Pointe Coupee Parish as part of its two-generation family literacy model. This component is intentionally designed to strengthen adult literacy competencies while simultaneously accelerating children's early language and reading development through shared, guided learning experiences.

PACT sessions are embedded within the Adult Education schedule and occur regularly to ensure consistency, routine, and measurable growth. Each session follows a research-based format that integrates modeling, guided practice, and independent application. Facilitators begin with interactive language warm-ups—songs, rhymes, and vocabulary-building activities—to promote phonological awareness and engagement. Staff then conduct a guided read-aloud, modeling evidence-based strategies such as dialogic reading, questioning techniques, and comprehension prompts so caregivers learn how to effectively support literacy development.

During structured parent–child practice time, families read together using developmentally appropriate and leveled texts while instructors provide coaching and individualized feedback. Hands-on literacy centers reinforce foundational skills including letter recognition, sound-symbol correspondence, storytelling, writing, and comprehension through play-based learning. Sessions conclude with reflection, skill reinforcement, and distribution of take-home books and literacy kits to promote continued reading practice beyond the program setting.

This intentional design positions caregivers as their child's first and most influential teacher, increasing parental confidence, strengthening home literacy routines, and reinforcing skills introduced during adult instruction. By aligning adult learning outcomes with children's early literacy milestones, the program creates a coordinated pathway that improves school readiness, family engagement, and long-term academic success for both generations.
