Program Overview

The PVLA has been proudly serving the Columbus, Nebraska, area for several decades as a United Way Agency. Our goal is to meet the educational needs of individuals in our community. We partner with the Central Community College Adult Education program to further increase educational opportunities in the area and help students gain the necessary skills to be successful in life.

In partnership with Central Community College, six levels of English instruction for adults are provided at the Columbus Family Resource Center. These classes target a student's verbal communication skills. As their speaking skills improve, reading and writing exercises are included in their instruction.

Our goals in teaching English as a Second Language (ESL) allow students to become more engaged as employees and community members. All classes are held twice a week, with morning and evening hours available.

GED® Preparation classes are aligned with the GED® 2022 test. Four individual tests must be passed to receive a GED® diploma: Reasoning through Language Arts, Mathematical Reasoning, Social Studies, and Science. Classes meet twice a week, with both morning and evening classes offered.

Citizenship courses are also offered, and these classes are designed to prepare individuals for the naturalization interview. Students study U.S. history and government throughout the course while practicing literacy skills. Citizenship classes are open to the public and are free of charge. All participants must be able to speak, comprehend, read, and write common English words and phrases. Anyone can join at any time.
