Program Overview

Peninsula READS serves adults 18 years and older, both native English speakers and non-English speakers, who desire to improve their English literacy skills. Citizenship and digital literacy classes are also offered. We have two major programs- Adult Basic Literacy for native English speakers and English for Speakers of other languages. Through the dedication of trained volunteer tutors, we teach them the skills they need to be more effective in their lives and communities. After literacy skills are assessed, adult learners are matched with a volunteer tutor who they will meet with once or twice a week on a one-on-one or small group basis. Classes are held in person or on a digital platform, such as Zoom. Adult residents of Newport News, Hampton, York County, and Poquoson Virginia are eligible for services,
