Program Overview

The Henderson Memorial Public Library teams up with area certified Therapy Dogs and their handlers to bring a literacy program to children or others who need reading practice. Paws to Read has been a successful program in many communities. Reading to a Therapy Dog benefits a child in many ways. Children are often more willing to interact with an animal than a person, and they do not feel intimidated when reading to a dog. This helps to build a child's self-esteem, improve reading skills, and children become more enthusiastic about reading. These skills lead to better performance in school, and children learn that learning can be fun.

This program is offered at specific times and dates during the year. Call the library to find out when the next program will be held.
