Program Overview
The one-to-one tutoring program serves those who cannot attend a traditional classroom program due to multiple work and/or family obligations. Volunteer tutors are matched with a local adult learner and meet individually for 2 hours each week.
Note: During COVID-19 all tutoring will take place online.
Lessons target each learner's goals, which may include employment, citizenship, and/or being an advocate for their children in the school system. This helps the learner develop real communication skills that can be used immediately in daily life. Once enrolled, learners may receive up to one year or 100 hours of tutoring services.
Volunteer tutors receive a 12-hour initial training, delivered through four, 3-hour interactive group workshops. Topics covered include tenets of the Language Experience Approach, information on best practices and learning tools and resources to help tutors assess and meet the needs of their learners. Tutors are trained in groups to encourage supportive relationships, and are connected to more experienced tutors as mentors. EAL offers training and social events for tutors each quarter to introduce news on best practices and keep them connected with us and each other.
