Program Overview

The GiGi's Playhouse 1:1 Literacy Tutoring Program uses a methodology with documented success based on research by professionals in the field. The ability to read opens doors for individuals with Down syndrome in the workplace, schools and the community. Developing reading skills also leads to improvements in speech and language development, auditory perceptual skills and working memory function. Our goal is to foster a love for reading and provide an opportunity to develop and master skills, all while building a positive relationship with our volunteer tutors. Trained tutors work at the level of the child, continually challenging and encouraging him/her to reach their Best of All. Students can start in our program as early as age 3 or any year after that. It's never too late to start! Weekly lessons last 45-60 minutes for 10-15 weeks at a time. Family members attend each tutoring session and leave with practical activities to continue the learning at home.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

In support of the tutor:

Hannah has been an amazing tutor for our son, Dan! She has made it a point to find out about his interests and meet him where he is at. Each week she finds creative ways to keep his interest in learning - from games to added rewards. Hannah goes above and beyond to making sure he is engaged with the lesson. Both my spouse and I have noticed where Hannah challenges our son to reach his full potential. We have been so encouraged and appreciate Hannah's willingness to continue to work with Dan! - Karin Carl, mom to Daniel

In support of the student – Best of All!

Daniel (Dan) is gaining skills and is interested in learning thanks to the support of his tutor Hannah. He is enrolled in 1:1 literacy tutoring for the second session with Hannah and is learning through games to added rewards. He is engaged in learning activities of interest that are a good fit for his current skills and is striving to reach his Best of All! Dan's parents have even noticed and “have been so encouraged and appreciate Hannah's creativity and willingness to continue to work with Dan!" - Karin Carl, mom to Daniel
