Program Overview

One Book, Many Families, One Community of Readers is a project designed to create a culture of literacy in every home as research shows literacy skills provide the basis for a lifetime of learning and productivity. The program goal is to empower parents and children to build and foster a lifelong love for reading as a result of shared literacy experiences which encompass reading, discussions, writing, and interactive activities. Studies have shown that parents who have a greater involvement in their children's schools have children who are more academically successful. Research also strongly suggests that students benefit most when parents, teachers, and students conduct shared reading and other enjoyable literacy-linked activities with confidence and with pleasure at home or at school. (Tystad, 2010; Jayroe & Brenner, 2005; Lynch, 2009; Zygouris-Coe, 2007). This project is designed to increase family literacy through participation in a community- wide book read targeting parents and their children.

One Book, Many Families, One Community will target families with students in Kindergarten through 4th grade city wide. The goals of the project include the following: increase family literacy, build a love for reading, make reading an enjoyable experience for families, create a warm engaging environment within the walls of the schools, equip parents with tools to use with their children to build competent readers, increase parent/child contact time, facilitate communication between families and schools, and finally to build relationships that bring the community of Plymouth together with a shared purpose.
