Program Overview
The Oakland Literacy Council provides basic literacy and English language instruction to adults in order to facilitate lifelong learning, employment skills and personal well-being. All Oakland County residents deserve to have the skills, knowledge, and understanding needed to flourish in today's complex and interconnected world. Literate students are able to achieve both personal and educational goals. They can do things like vote, increase their workplace productivity, and pass on the gift of reading to their children. The most important benefit is the improvement in the overall quality of life.

After I retired, I was a 55-year-old man that would not dare pick up a book and read a story to my grandkids. It has been four years now, and I am pretty proud of myself. — Student David
From my experience, people are so appreciative, which is very, very fulfilling. — Tutor Eric
With my mother tongue, I [was] trapped in one world. With English, it's a new kind of view of the world. It's very moving. — Student Tina
Today, Su speaks fluent English. Seven months ago she would not have spoken to a grocery store clerk, a sales person, a librarian or anyone else in public. — Tutor Susan
I can write the grocery list. I can read with my granddaughter. I can read the signs when I'm driving and read my Mother's Day cards out loud. — Student Onida
