Program Overview
The mission of Adult Education (AE) at Northwest Mississippi Community College is to offer adults the educational opportunity to improve literacy skills, obtain a high school equivalency diploma, become a self-reliant individual, and acquire the knowledge necessary to become a successful worker, family member, and citizen.
For eighty-nine years, the Adult Education program of Northwest Mississippi Community College has offered classes in math, vocabulary, reading comprehension, social studies, science, and writing. Recently, Adult Education classes have also incorporated the teaching of the Mississippi Smart Start Curriculum. The Smart Start program prepares students to obtain workforce and industry specific certificates and credentials needed for employment.
Adults, seventeen years of age and older who meet certain requirements, are eligible to enroll. Excellent instructors, literacy experts and tutors work with students using lecture, group work, on-line programs, and one-on-one instruction. After obtaining a high school equivalency diploma, students are assisted with a transition to the next stage of life. Support is provided to help the students either enter post-secondary, the workforce or joining the military. The Adult Education Program helps guide every student to a better and brighter future.
