Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Brian and his wife moved to Georgia from California, hoping to find a more economical place to live and raise their children. The adjustment proved more difficult than they'd expected, and the family struggled financially. While Brian and his wife were employed during this time, their pay was low. Brian had limited job options because he hadn't graduated from high school; his wife also worked at a low-wage job.

Life began looking up when Brian was referred to the education program for GED tutoring. While working two part-time jobs, Brian attended GED tutoring session. He worked hard and quickly passed three of the four subject matter tests, but he wrestled with the math portion. With the help of dedicated GED tutors, Brian was able to overcome this obstacle. "They taught me how to use a calculator. They taught me how to do math I didn't know, certain algebra equations. Math was my hardest test," he said. It may have been his hardest, but Brian passed that test, "..ten points higher than any other test I'd taken."

Brian's goal was to earn his GED and enroll in HVAC training at a local community college - and he's done both. With his GED and HVAC training completed, Brian's employment and earning potential will increase significantly. He is helping to change the future of his family. You can watch Brian's story on The Faces of NFCC YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/NFCCHelp1.
