Program Overview

Newton READS!

Newton Reads is the Newton County two-generation literacy coalition. NCFC partners with GA Piedmont Technical College to serve adult learners through their adult education program. This can be either virtually or in person.

NCFC refers students to Georgia Piedmont Technical College (GPTC), which offers a certification program in 5 career pathways and includes attainment of a GED. NCFC places volunteers onsite to tutor and encourage students who require help to successfully transition into, and graduate from, their adult education classes. The expected outcome is that through this partnership, volunteer tutor/mentors will increase the number of students who are accepted into GPTC programs and who complete the GED/Certification process.

Cost Info

All adult literacy services provided by the Newton County Family Connection are free of cost. We refer students to Georgia Piedmont Technical College which partners with NR volunteers to increase retention in adult basic education leading to GED or HiSET Certification.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

The Newton County Success Story is a continuation of the story of the single mom with at 13 year old and a now 4 year old living at the Housing Authority. She became an Uber driver by renting a vehicle from them, then learned to schedule her driving to regulate her income so she was able to stay at the Housing Authority. NCFC staff helped her find a Quality Rated childcare center. Her daughter is on the honor roll at her middle school. She is planning to apply for the Career Academy next year. Mom is committed to pursuing her own education; passed the Math portion of the GED test, but could not pass the English. GA Piedmont teachers suggested that she may have a learning disability, but could not offer accommodations unless she had a formal assessment. The cost to have an assessment is $600.00. On her own, she contacted GA State University and applied to a program with students learning to conduct assessments. She was accepted, and NCFC volunteers are driving her the 40 miles to the GSU Atlanta campus for help. We are so proud of her! Literacy involves more than offering classes, adults who live in poverty have a greater chance of success when they have support to overcome barriers of transportation, childcare, safe housing and income. This is the program NCFC hopes to expand.
