Work Keys, and English as a Second Language classes for adults sixteen plus
years of age and older who lack a high school credential; provided through partnership with the Newberry Adult Education program)
activities between parent and child time, and
The Newberry Family Literacy's home visitation (Parents as Teachers) component is funded by First Steps. By partnering with the Newberry County School District the clients are offered a wide range of services through Family Literacy. The targeted populations are parents with a child birth-three years of age, or those expecting a child and who are below the poverty level.
Services are provided in a centralized location for participants not enrolled in traditional high school settings, as well as those enrolled in the traditional school settings. Parent educators work with families through home visitation, parent meetings, PACT, and resource referral. The intensity of program services delivery matches the specific needs of each family. The Newberry Family Literacy Program is housed in the same facility as Newberry Adult Education, allowing a close working relationship between the two entities. Many clients participate in
Adult Education programs. The Family Literacy Program also provides preschool (Bright Beginnings) for qualifying
families. The other parents are in the traditional school settings such as high schools and middle schools.
