Program Overview

Currently, one in eight Nashville adults is unable to read. Nashville also has an expanding cohort of adults needing English skills, as the city's foreign-born population has grown from two percent to twelve percent over the past two decades. Literacy is the foundation for a better life. Adult literacy rates impact every part of Nashville: employment and poverty levels, healthcare costs, K-12 school performance, family and community relationships, and general dependence on systems for support. NALC offers multi-generational independence through literacy.

We offer free one-on-one tutoring for both literacy (reading and writing) and English learners as well as group classes for English learners. We rely on volunteers to provide our tutoring and provide extensive training to ensure quality instruction. We spend a great deal of time working with individuals to match them to tutors or classes that best fit their needs and schedules.

Hours of operation: M-Th 9am-8pm, Fri 9am-3pm

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

One of our learners recently discovered that literacy has power beyond reading and writing skills. He shared that he has never read an entire book, but thanks to his literacy tutoring, he is currently reading the novel "Hoot" and has a new understanding of why people love to read. For the first time he feels whole and valid. He has taken this confidence into his life by starting conversations with co-workers and engaging with others – something he avoided in the past due to insecurity. He says, "I am slowly understanding, and I had to first come to a belief that I matter, as I am, by the help of others. Which gives me the courage to accept where I'm at with my reading and communication level." When we give someone literacy tools, we empower them to not only read and write, but thrive in all parts of their lives.
