Program Overview
Academy/SEL: Students in grades 3-8 enroll for the entire school year, attend Mon-Fri from 3-6pm. They receive homework help, snacks/meals and writing instruction infused with Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) activities.
Literary arts workshops: These workshops, tailored to diverse age groups, offer arts-integrated activities that foster creativity and inspiration through music, visual arts, theater, dance, literature, and more. They happen outside of Academy hours and welcome children from across the city or region, helping to drive MW's reputation in the community. Past workshops include Hip-Hop Poets, Girl Power Theater and Musically Mighty.
One-on-one mentorships: Students are paired with community-based tutors to achieve academic and social-emotional goals. Students meet with their mentors, who are chosen for compatibility and expertise, for four hours per month. They work as a team on three goals, at least one of which is writing-related.
Mighty Toddlers: The littlest of our Mighty Writers learn to familiarize themselves with words and writing through letter recognition, story time, book creation, and more. Parents and caregivers are involved in these groups and often form strong bonds with other parents.
Teen Programs: Weekly programs explore post-secondary school options, including college pathways, trade schools, application processes, financial aid and admissions criteria. A range of themes provide teens with opportunities to build community, write together and explore areas of interest. Fellowships provide stipends for long-term community oriented writing projects. College Essay Writing pairs students with a mentor to draft, revise and finalize applications.
Family Write Night: Kids and families spend quality time together, participate in cultural activities, create art, eat dinner and improve reading and writing skills. At our bilingual sites, families meet other Latino families and build communities of support.
Summer Camp: Mighty summer camps are full days (minimum seven hours per day) running Monday through Friday for six weeks for ages 8-14. Mighty Writers provides breakfast, lunch and snack and all youth commit to join us for the entire summer. In addition to writing workshops, summer camps offer interdisciplinary programs, sports and field trips.
