Program Overview
Mid-Valley Literacy Center started in 2009 when the local community college cut their Literacy Volunteer Program. We have trained over 700 volunteer tutors who have worked with more than 3,000 adults in 6 counties in Oregon. We provide training for volunteer tutors who then teach the subjects needed for GED preparation, English for speakers of other languages, U.S. Citizenship preparation, Basic Spanish Literacy, language preparation for Certified Nursing Assistants, and computer basics. We have served students from 55 countries and who speak more than 30 languages. We also teach English to employees at their job sites with customized, industry specific curriculum for enhancement of job skills.

With the help and support of our volunteer tutors a student passed the Oregon State Board of Nursing exam to become a full time CNA with our partner, the Providence Benedictine Nursing Center. This student is now back in our classes this term to prepare for U.S. Citizenship and her niece is joining her.
During one of our classes, a volunteer tutor shared information about the Heimlich maneuver. That weekend a student's grandmother choked on food. The student successfully performed the maneuver, dislodging the food and saved her grandmother's life.
