Student and Volunteer Success Stories

When Ana Coria came to The Literacy Center in 2015 she was already on the road to success. She had been promoted from the night shift at her place of employment, Innovative Textiles, to head of her department on the day shift! The company was so impressed with her and her potential that the HR representative approached her about taking classes to improve her English and offered to pay her while in class. Ana politely declined the offer. She explained that she was self-motivated to improve her English and did not feel comfortable taking money for her personal goal. Ana then came to The Literacy Center to find a tutor to improve her English, not only for herself, but as a role model for her two children, for her growing friendships with native English speakers, and for employment opportunities.

For the past three years Ana has been working with her tutor, Denise Okeson. Ana has improved her English consistently, moving up a level or two every time she has been assessed. Her improvement has manifested itself in all aspects of her life. She feels more confident as a parent when speaking with teachers and doctors. At work, she has been given more responsibility because of her improved English.
In 2017, when her daughter was about to graduate from high school, Ana informed her tutor that she wanted to pursue a High School Equivalency. Soon after, The Literacy Center began its Career Online High School and Ana applied. With her improved English skills she was able to pass all necessary steps to be accepted into the program. She is currently enrolled in the program and has progressed faster than any of the other students, completing three-quarters of the course work in under 8 months. Ana looks forward to walking the stage at the next Career Online High School Graduation in December, 2018.
