Program Overview

Empowering Adults Through Education: The Adult Education Program at Mercer Street Friends

Our adult education program is a welcoming, supportive, and goal-oriented learning environment designed to help adults achieve educational and professional success. We understand that adult learners come with unique life experiences, responsibilities, and challenges. Our program is built to meet learners where they are, providing personalized instruction, skill-building, and guidance toward their educational goals—whether that's earning a high school equivalency (HSE) diploma, improving literacy and numeracy skills, or working towards a new career.

Our program recognizes that adult learners are balancing jobs, family responsibilities, and other life demands. We strive to create an environment that is flexible, understanding, and deeply supportive. Our classes are small enough to allow individualized attention, and our teacher and tutors are trained to not only teach academic content but also to encourage confidence, perseverance, and self-advocacy.

At the core of our program is preparation for the GED exam. We teach reading, writing, mathematics, science, and social studies with a focus on the skills and knowledge needed to pass HSE tests. Our instructors use evidence-based teaching methods and integrate real-world examples to make learning relevant and engaging.
