Program Overview

Teacher at Home

In partnership with ACPTA and Texas PTA, Austin ISD offers this basic English course for families of district students. From October to April of each year, participants take classes at their children's schools to learn not only the language but also how to deal with common situations and the vocabulary to master in the topics of the six Maestro en Casa sections: Housing, Health, Finance, Work, Education and Citizenship.

The classes are free and taught by Austin ISD parent support specialists or by volunteer teachers. At the end of the program, parents participate in a graduation ceremony and receive their diploma, with the satisfaction of having better communication tools and, many of them, with the motivation to continue their studies.
