Program Overview

The centerpiece of Literacy Volunteers Valley Shore
(LVVS) is our one-on-one student instruction. Program activities include tutoring using life and work skills training in areas targeting proficiency in education skills, family skills and health, citizenship skills and community skills. We also provide certified trainers, nationally certified tutor training workshops and a library of instructional materials.

The Workplace Literacy Program initiative is a targeted, workplace-specific literacy program that is tailored to support both employer and employee needs.

Employers hosting workplace literacy programs receive, at no cost, LVVS certified ESL/Basic Literacy tutors who meet one-to-one with employees at their workplace to address specific
work-related skills [e.g., the ability to understand and follow written work instructions or safety procedures posted at workstations in a manufacturing plant].

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

As one student, Jenny, says, Most of the imigrants who come to this country encounter some obstacles, what I personally consider the most important and difficult to achieve is the language. At first for me it was very difficult to try to strike up a conversation because the words sounded like noises to me, but thanks to my dear teacher George who at first when he spoke to me sounded like noises gradually were converted into meaningful words, which now I not only can interpret but also I use to communicate with my coworkers and the test of the people in this country. I got my driver's license, which for me was a real achievement.

Some months ago I got my United States citizenship which

reminded me of my college days when we felt so pressured that even in our

dreams we were studying for the exam.

Thanks to the help of

my teacher I have learned a little of the language and therefore I have opened

more opportunities. And, this makes me proud."
