Program Overview

Literacy Volunteers of Greater New Haven (LVAGNH) is a non-profit organization that has been active in the region since 1976. Last year Literacy Volunteers supported 248 volunteer tutors who delivered free tutoring to more than 1,352 adult students at 42 sites.

Trained volunteer tutors work with adults 1:1 or in small group settings in our English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) program and in our Basic Literacy program, which serves adults who speak English but need help learning to read at a higher level.

Classes are traditionally held weekly at a variety of sites throughout the LVAGNH areas: Greater New Haven, Gateway Community College, Meriden/Wallingford, The Valley. Since the pandemic, most classes are being taught virtually, via Zoom or other distance learning platforms.

Tutors and students meet once or twice a week and work on established curricula. Day and evening classes are offered.

All classes are free. Students are accepted year-round depending on tutor availability.
