Program Overview
The Louisville Public Library (LPL) is the community center that provides gathering space for the public to access educational, cultural, and recreational materials, services, and programs to all persons for the purpose of learning and the free exchange of ideas. In 1935, it was decided to open the school's library to the general public in the school district. The first children's hour was held in 1937, a tradition continued today. The Audio Visual department was started in 1943 with a record album collection. In 1952, the library moved to the Martig House, where it grew to take up ten rooms. Due to increased collection size and circulations, soon outgrew the property and in 1964 a bond issue funded the building of the current library. The past decades have brought many changes, including the addition of DVDs, national newspapers, audiobooks, and other digital services. We are planning a 21st century building with adjacent community center. LPL has held an important position in the community since it began; providing materials and services required by a changing society.Education services
