Program Overview

Members of the 2017 Texas Legislature did not fund $118,000,000 pre-kindergarten grant while knowing high quality early childhood programs can play an important role in preparing poor children for learning and buffering the negative impacts of poverty.

Kids-U is positioned to offer a solution to support poor children who have limited access to affordable, high-quality early childhood programs. In Texas, specifically in Dallas where Kids-U offers afterschool and summer programs, preschool programs are not available to all students.

Kids-U is READY to help alleviate the need of FREE high-quality preschool programs for 225 low income students.

Where? Kids-U has space readily available for use during the hours of 9am –2pm. Kids-U partners with apartment owners in low-income areas to provide services for their apartment communities. The current services address school age kids and adults. Before now, we have unintentionally excluded children younger than 5.

Why us? Kids-U has a positive reputation with the families in the DFW community. Having provided educational services for over 16 years, Kids-U has proven itself to be a stable, trustworthy organization. Our staff build relationships with both the families we serve and the apartment community. Now we would be asking them to trust us with their younger children.

Who will help? Kids-U also has the access to available resources for a high-quality preschool program. Partnering with experts for a win/win situation has afforded Kids-U to offer indirect services that benefit our families and ultimately our students. We plan to partner with agencies such as Educational First Steps, The Child Care Group or other high-quality early learning programs.

What? Kids-U has kids in its current programs that would have benefitted from a FREE high-quality preschool program. Kids-U's offering of this Pre-k program will expand the access to a particular group of poor kids in need of such an opportunity for success in school and life.
