Program Overview

The GiGi's Playhouse 1:1 Literacy Tutoring Program uses a methodology with documented success based on research by professionals in the field.

The ability to read opens doors for individuals with Down syndrome in the workplace, schools and the community. Developing reading skills also leads to improvements in speech and language development, auditory perceptual skills and working memory function.

Our goal is to foster a love for reading and provide an opportunity to develop and master skills, all while building a positive relationship with our volunteer tutors. Trained tutors work at the level of the child, continually challenging and encouraging him/her to reach their Best of All.

Student and Volunteer Success Stories

Barry is very proud of being the oldest participant at GiGi's Playhouse, Fort Myers. Barry turned 60 in 2021 and celebrated with a big birthday party at Fantastic Friends. About 3 years ago, Barry decided on his own that he wanted to improve his reading and began participating in Literacy tutoring. He started out with in-person tutoring but went to virtual when we had to close down the Playhouse for COVID. During virtual, Barry's tutor, Alex, would send his sister, Wendy, books and worksheets so he could have them in front of him for the lesson. Barry loves to read flashcards! Alex would also send Wendy recipes and Barry and Alex would cook together - Barry in his kitchen and Alex in her kitchen. Barry read the recipe, followed the directions, and created a healthy snack. Then Barry and Alex would virtually enjoy their snack together. Barry became so interested in reading that he wanted to write his own book. While staying home during COVID, Barry and Wendy would take walks every day around their neighborhood. They took pictures of neighbors and some of the interesting things they would see - like the burrowing owls that live in the open fields. Together they created the book with Barry telling Wendy what to type for each picture and once printed, Barry had his book, Barry's Book About Walking, to share with many different friends.

Barry participates in GiGiFIT and loves coming to Fantastic Friends. He is a great dancer and he loves singing karaoke. Barry also helps out at the Playhouse by doing our shredding for us. Barry is a true example of living his Best of All!
