Benefits: Increased self-esteem, increased confidence, fine motor development, disposed stereotypes and misconceptions, greater inclusion in general education classrooms, more active role in schools and community, broader communication and speech abilities, greater social interaction and friendships, and articulation development. The GiGi's Literacy program incorporates a plethora of resources for teaching reading skills including; computer games, pocket word charts, phonics and alphabet resources, manipulative and more. Student and Volunteer Success Stories

One of our long time Elementary Literacy students decided to take a chance and audition for a local PBS television show called Reading Buddies. The casting agents and creators did not have a character with Down syndrome as part of their story line, but they were so impressed with our student that they created a role for him and cast him! He has been on the show for 2 seasons. Our literacy program has built his confidence and skills that helped him succeed and secure this part.
